Update!

Brant_accordion_picIf you've found your way to our blog, you may be searching the internet to find out what happened to "Jeff & Stace in the morning."  See the "Final Post" below for more details.

An update on the information cited below is in order.  If you've tuned in recently, you'll notice that I'm already "gone."  We've begin including highlights from our night show Total Axxess as we ramp up to "Mornings with Brant" on July 7th (that's Brant to your left).  Very soon, you'll begin hearing highlights from the new show also as we begin to attempt to familiarize you with what you are in for.

Don't worry.  I have a strong feeling you're going to love your new morning team.  I do already, not only because they're arrival means I no longer have to get up at 2:45am, but also because they're a joy to listen to.

Don't forget to set your watch/calendar.  July 7th starting at 5am central time!

Final Post

Hey there!  Many people have asked some variation of, "What's going on with the show?"  This is just a note to let you know that the current incarnation of "Jeff & Stace in the morning" has officially come to an end.

Stace and I are transitioning into other roles currently. Stace has already exited her on-air role and is concentrating on her music director duties for the time being. I will continue on the air until about June 30th/July 1st, at which time I’ll come off the air to concentrate on my duties as Operations Director.

I am very excited about the new morning show (it features Brant Hansen and his producer Nikki). Brant, in my opinion, is the single best talent in our company and maybe the country. He just won Large Market Personality of the Year during April's Gospel Music Week in Nashville.

Probably sometime in June, I'll give you a chance to familiarize yourself with Brant as I'll be slowly integrating him into the show. You're in for a real treat!

And, I'd be remiss if I didn't thank you for listening to the show these last 2 1/2, almost 3, years (6 if you count the pre-Stace era).  Stace and I hope you've enjoyed it.

Sincerely,

Jeff Brown

P.S. You may've noticed the jeffandstace.com URL is no longer active (it only forwarded to this address anyway).  I pulled it since "Jeff & Stace," as a show, had ended.  However, I realized that many people had this URL saved in their favorites; hence my reason for writing a final post.  If you'd like to keep up with me, through the eyes of my dog at least, you may do so at www.thecelebritypup.com

Show Notes for Friday, April 18th...

Clock_face_2It's almost as if time stood still yesterday.  It must have.  Afterall, there seems to be no blog post for Thursday, April 17th.  Actually, it seems the "crud" is making the rounds here at the radio station.  Jeff was out sick yesterday (he normally updates the blog).  Stace is out sick today.  Truth is, if there was anyone else who could step in, both Jeff and Stace would be staying home today.  But the show must go on!

Because of some technical difficulties yesterday with the phones, there was no Family Name Game which means Olivia (yesterday's intended name) is the name today.  You know what to do.

Fritz (Jeff and Annie's Dachshund) is a talented little guy.  Last week, he began his own blog!  You'll find it at TheCelebrityPup.com! Fritz says he plans to use his new-found interest to give pets and humans alike his "unique insights into the world." You've heard of dogs that talk?  Well, this one can type!

Okay, we all get stressed out right?  Dr. Lynne Tan, psychiatrist at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, and some stars share their tips to "chill-out."

  • Write things out -- Writing your thoughts channels energy from something negative into something positive. Jessica Simpson says she goes through a journal every 5 months.
  • Pamper yourself -- Take care of yourself! Go get a massage! Hilary Swank says, "I love to relax with a pedicure!"
  • Change your focus -- Go to a museum, read a book, focus on what makes you happy!
  • Calm down girl -- Take a tip from Oprah... she says when things get chaotic she heads straight for a bubble-bath. The crazier things are on the outside... the calmer she needs to be on the inside.
  • Hit the gym -- Working out is just plain good for you -- body and soul! Eva Longoria says she's been working out for a long time and feels great!
  • Get back to nature -- Christina Applegate says she sets aside at least 20 minutes in the sun every day.

In just a couple of weeks the government will begin mailing out those tax rebate checks. And if you’re like most people, there isn’t a flat-screen TV or a vacation in your future. Of course the federal government would prefer you spend it, but chances are you plan to maybe pay off debts, pad your gas budget, replace an old appliance or beef up your savings for a rainy day.

So she didn’t win American Idol, but Kristy Lee Cook has won the heart of Andy Dobner. The two are now engaged. He first proposed on March 15th, but Kristy says she wanted to keep it quiet so she could focus on Idol. But Andy surprised her with a very public proposal when he popped the question on TV on American Idol Extra yesterday. She said he “actually got down on his knees this time. The first time he didn’t so he owed it to me,” she said.

An earthquake was felt this morning in an area not used to having them. People in St. Louis, Louisville, Bowling Green, Indianapolis and Nashville are all reporting having felt tremors. There’ve been no reports of damage other than pictures falling off walls. Tremors lasted about a minute. It registered 4.5 and was centered near West Salem, Illinois. Crews are out this morning checking for structural damage.

Being in the dog house isn’t so bad if it’s a dog house from a company called La Petite Maison (French for “the little mansion”). Animal lovers with cash to spare are spoiling their dogs with their own mini-mansions. Usually, they’re modeled after your own home. Most of them sell for between $6,000 and $25,000 and can be equipped with air-conditioning and other features.  You won't believe some of these.  Click the link below to see photos.

The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded has passed $3.40 and prices are expected to climb toward $4 a gallon as the summer driving season nears. If you’re like most people, you’ve already cut back a little bit. Now you may have to cut back some more. Regardless of where prices peak, experts think July and August will be very busy.

Believe it or not, a new study has just come out with a very surprising finding. MEN ARE MORE FORGETFUL THAN WOMEN! They found as men get older, they are one-and-a-half times more likely to develop memory problems.

If you're hoping to catch a flick this weekend and need some help making up your mind, then check out the Plugged-In Movie Review from Focus on the Family.  They use a "family-friendliness" ratings system to help you determine if what you're thinking about seeing is appropriate for the whole family.

Monday on the Family Name Game we'll call out the name Michael. If you're the immediate family member (mom , dad, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife) of Michael, listen then for your chance to make her the STAR of the show. KNOW a family with a Michael. Don't just sit there - call them NOW so they can play! If you want to suggest a name, just send it to jeffandstace@aol.com.

Show Notes for Wednesday, April 16th...

David_cook400It was hard not to be moved by David Cook’s performance last night on American Idol. You could tell it meant a lot to him for his brother, who is battling brain cancer, to be there. In fact, his brother Adam shot to his feet for a standing ovation as soon as David finished. At that point, David couldn’t hold back the tears any longer. What you didn’t see was that during the commercial break, David walked down to hug his brother in his seat. And, all three judges – Simon, Paula and Randy – hugged him too. Adam hopes to be at tonight’s results show too before returning home on tomorrow.

It’s hard to believe that time has gone by so fast, but it was one year ago today that a student at Virginia Tech took the lives of 32 people before taking his own life. There will be a remembrance ceremony today with both the president of Virginia Tech and the Governor of the state speaking. Tonight, students and faculty will hold a candlelight vigil to remember those who were lost.

Elvis’ wife has left the building. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Priscilla Presley’s “Dancing With the Stars” experience has come to an end. She’s the latest to leave the show. The judges weren’t real pleased with her performance Monday, saying she was too careful with her rumba. She said afterward though that, for her, the show was as life-changing experience.

I’ve heard of unique wedding proposals, but this one is definitely original. Bernie Peng’s girlfriend loves to play a video game called “Bejeweled.” Well, Bernie, who is a computer programmer, used his geek powers to hack into her game and set it up so that when she reached a certain score, a ring and a proposal would show up on the screen. She reached the score – and said yes! They plan to get married over Labor Day weekend, and the company that makes the video game is flying them to Seattle as part of their honeymoon. And, they’re going to provide copies of the game to hand out as favors to the wedding guests.

You might find it hard to believe, but a principal at McLean Elementary school in Virginia has banned the game of tag during recess. She’s decided the game has gotten out of hand, telling parents it had become a game of “intense aggression.” She says her goal is to keep students safe and she hopes to restore tag (and touch football, also now on hold) after teachers and administrators review recess policies. Some, though, say that the fun is being regulated out of normal activity.

If you’re banking online, chances are you’re a pretty satisfied customer. A new survey out says overall satisfaction over the last five years is up when it comes to online banking. In fact, the survey suggested that most of us are more pleased with our banks’ online operations than we are with the actual branch we occasionally visit in person.

You’ve heard before concerns about chemicals and plastic bottles. Well, the government says a chemical in some plastic bottles and drink packaging, including baby bottles, may be linked to early puberty and prostate and breast cancer. The FDA is being asked to reconsider whether the chemical bisphenol A is safe. It’s used in many baby bottles and the plastic lining of cans of infant formula.

You might not realize it, but a new study says your brain may actually make some decisions up to 10 seconds before those decision actually bubble up to conscious thought. Funny, they saw this as a positive, saying the brain is working faster than we realize. In other words, your brain DECIDES faster than you’re able THINK. I just want to know why it takes so long for these decisions to travel to my consciousness. It doesn’t have that far to go.

Thursday on the Family Name Game we'll call out the name Olivia. If you're the immediate family member (mom , dad, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife) of Olivia, listen then for your chance to make her the STAR of the show. KNOW a family with a Olivia. Don't just sit there - call them NOW so they can play! If you want to suggest a name, just send it to jeffandstace@aol.com.

Show Notes for Tuesday, April 15th...

David_cookYou may’ve heard that American Idol contestant David Cook has a brother Adam who is suffering from cancer. Adam has wanted for while to come to the show to watch his brother perform and, tonight, he finally gets the chance. Doctors initially said his condition was too delicate, but friends got together and were able to get Adam and his wife a chartered medical jet, along with medical staff and a hotel room for the trip. Adam’s wife says, “The excitement of seeing his spirits lifted so high has been wonderful.”

As you may’ve noticed, gas prices aren’t the only thing going up. We are seeing the worst food inflation in 17 years. And the people who analyze these numbers expect new data out tomorrow to show it’s getting worse. It’s putting the squeeze especially on poor families, and at the same time, forcing bakeries, bagel shops and delis to have explain price increases to their customers. Still, if there’s a bright side, we spend a smaller chunk of our expenses on food than in any other country.

There’s been a lot of turmoil in the airline industry with the FAA crackdown on wiring issues. Yesterday, Delta and Northwest agreed to merge, in part because of fuel prices and the economy. The combined airline will be called Delta and it’ll be the world’s biggest airline company. There will be a number of job cuts or transfers through the consolidation process.

As you know, today is the day. Yes, it’s that awful deadline that creeps up on us every year. TAX DAY. Of course, to avoid a late filing penalty, you gotta make sure your return is mailed by midnight with a Tuesday, April 15th postmark. Throughout the country in fact, there are a number of post offices that will stay open late and of course there are also several ways to file your taxes online. Another option is filing for an extension which gives you until October to get your taxes in.

Pope Benedict the 16th has a packed schedule for his first-ever trip to the U.S. He’ll hook up with President Bush this afternoon when he arrives at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, DC. One of the President’s aides says he and the Pope share a lot of common values including advancing freedom and human rights around the world.

If you’re trying to lose weight, maybe you should try a baked beans diet. It worked for one person. Neil King lost 140 pounds in nine months on a diet of mostly baked beans. In fact, since June, he’s eaten more than half a ton of them or about 1,500 cans. He eats about six cans a day, and has them with rice for lunch and with a potato in the evening. He says his high fiber diet has been gas-free since he stopped having toast with his beans.

You might’ve heard yesterday three Midwest colleges found threatening messages on the stalls of men’s bathrooms. The messages were enough of a concern that all three canceled classes yesterday. Two resume classes today but one remains closed. The wording on the threats were similar but they’re not sure yet if they are related. In light of what happened at Northern Illinois University exactly to months ago, and the fact tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings, school officials felt the messages needed to be taken seriously.

Given a choice, most of us prefer a dollar bill over a dollar coin. But at the same time, many of us are against getting rid of the penny. A new poll also shows that more than two-thirds of us feel paper money should be more colorful to make it easier to tell them apart. Those new dollars coins that came out last year – only 1 in 4 people in the survey said they’d seen one.

If you’re a fan of former American Idol contestant Kelly Pickler, you’ll be glad to know she made out all right at last night’s CMT Awards. She won three trophies for breakthrough video, tearjerker video and performance of the year for “I Wonder,” song about a daughter’s feelings for her mom. Miley Cyrus and her dad Billy Ray seemed to have a blast hosting the show.

Wednesday on the Family Name Game we'll call out the name Christopher. If you're the immediate family member (mom , dad, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife) of Christopher, listen then for your chance to make him the STAR of the show. KNOW a family with a Christopher. Don't just sit there - call them NOW so they can play! If you want to suggest a name, just send it to jeffandstace@aol.com.

Show Notes for Monday, April 14th...

BlissgirlIf you’re on the hunt for ways to boost your energy, there are at least 10 ways you can do it right now. The right lighting can make a dramatic difference. Protein increases your mental alertness and energy. And, taking a break from your gadgets can help you. Cell phones, in particular, put increased stress on women, according to research.  Click the link below for more.  By the way, we suggest replacing No. 9 with prayer and Bible reading.

Fritz (Jeff and Annie's Dachshund) actually decided to begin his own blog. You'll find it at TheCelebrityPup.com! Fritz says he plans to use his new-found interest to give pets and humans alike his "unique insights into the world." No word yet on how he's actually managing to type, or if he's simply dictating his posts to mom and dad.

Last week was probably pretty rough for you if you had to fly on American Airlines. Over the weekend, the FAA cleared American to return all but three of their grounded jets back into service. In all, American canceled nearly 3,300 flights. They said they thought they had the needed repair work done two weeks ago, but the FAA said the wiring still was not secured and stowed properly in the plane’s wheel wells. Between the canceled flights and vouchers to reimburse people, American will have lost about $30 million.

Another week means another record price at the pump. Prices rose about a penny to a new national average of $3.36 a gallon. It’s 56 cents higher than it was a year ago. Experts believe prices will continue to rise for now, particularly for self-serve regular.

Check the cupboard this morning before sitting down to breakfast. At least 23 people in 14 different states have gotten sick by the same strain of salmonella found in two breakfast cereals. The company Malt-O-Meal has recalled their unsweetened Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereals. Three people have ended up in the hospital.  Click the link below for more info.

Imagine gas at 35 cents a gallon. Too good to be true? Not if you visited the Kangaroo Express BP gas station last week. An employee at a North Carolina gas station accidentally set the price at 35 cents. The amount was punched in at 9am Friday for premium-grade gas, and it wasn’t noticed until about 6 that night when crowds of people started to show up and caused a traffic jam. An employee said people had been coming in all day stiffing them and not saying anything.

If you use a Windows machine with XP, chances are you want to keep it that way. Microsoft wants the world to upgrade to Vista of course but, with several bugs in Vista to contend with, agreed to extend XP’s availability until June 30. Now there’s a petition to “Save Windows XP” with over 100,000 signatures asking Microsoft to keep XP as an option beyond the deadline.

Barack Obama is on the defensive as he clarifies comments he made in regard to bitter voters. He says he may not have chosen his words wisely when he said people hit by economic hard times get bitter and cling to guns and religion. Last night at a forum on faith in public life he said he wasn’t demeaning a faith that he himself embraces. He said he was referring to the fact that ordinary Americans have no confidence that the government is listening to them.

When it comes to cheating on taxes, most of us say we have no respect for anyone who does it. A new study asked people to rank ten behaviors based on their level of moral wrongness. It ranked second on the list to another kind of cheating. 5% of people actually said they believed cheating on their taxes was morally acceptable, and 14% believed it’s not a moral issue at all.

At the movies…the number one flick over the weekend was the horror movie “Prom Night,” which took in over 22-million dollars. The new Keanu Reeves movie “Street Kings” was number two. “21,” which was number one last week fell to number three, followed by “Nim’s Island” at number four and “Leatherheads” was five.

Tuesday on the Family Name Game we'll call out the name Abigail. If you're the immediate family member (mom , dad, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife) of Abigail, listen then for your chance to make her the STAR of the show. KNOW a family with a Abigail. Don't just sit there - call them NOW so they can play! If you want to suggest a name, just send it to jeffandstace@aol.com.

Show Notes for Friday, April 11th...

If you’re a diehard American Idol fan, you’ll be excited to know you can put some or your favorite past contestants on your outgoing mail. Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Jordin Sparks are part of a limited-edition set of stamps coming out soon. Money raised from the stamps will go to the “Idol Gives Back” charity. Kelly Clarkson is this week’s featured artist. Only 2000 sets will be offered each week per state.

In case you missed Idol contestants singing "Shout to the Lord" at the end of Wednesday's "Idol Gives Back" show, here it is again:

Interestingly, there was also this version that aired last night which included the original "Jesus" lyric in the first line as opposed to "Shepherd."

Just this past weekend, Fritz (Jeff and Annie's Dachshund) actually decided to begin his own blog. You'll find it at TheCelebrityPup.com! The latest round of flight cancellations has gotten a lot of people concerned about safety. Questions range from “How severe is the danger?” to “Is it possible the groundings are an overreaction?” We’ve put a link on our website this morning with answers to several of these questions.

American Airlines’ rough times show no signs of letting up. If you’re on one of about 570 flights scheduled today with American, you’ll have to make new arrangements to get to where you’re going. They cancelled today’s flight in order to continue inspections on their fleet of MD-80 planes.

All three presidential hopefuls made cameo appearances on “American Idol” last night. John McCain joked that AI is a lot like a presidential primary election, except for people who live in Michigan or Florida – their votes actually count. Obama and Clinton stopped by too but were a little more serious.

A new survey suggests that as many as one in five women suffer from symptoms of postpartum depression. They survey goes on to say that women with less education are more prone to symptoms than other women.

Show Notes for Thursday, April 10th...

Airplane_2It’s just keeps getting worse at the airport. After canceling nearly 500 flights yesterday, American Airlines plans to cancel than a thousand today, all to fix faulty wiring. It’s the third straight day of mass cancellations. They’re apologizing profusely as you might imagine and offering travel vouchers to calm angry customers. The flights canceled total about 2,400 since Tuesday, or about one in three flights.

Knowing what foods are best for you and in what quantities can sometimes be a real challenge as nutritional experts continue to study the healing powers of certain foods. So-called “super foods” are thought to help you live longer and prevent certain diseases like cancer and diabetes. The top five foods you should get every day are whole grains, dark-green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, low-fat yogurt and milk and tea. See the link below for more on this.

Just this past weekend, Fritz (Jeff and Annie's Dachshund) actually decided to begin his own blog. You'll find it at TheCelebrityPup.com! A new study out of Yale University says weight discrimination is on the rise. They say that perceived discrimination against overweight people has gone up 5% in the last 10 years. They also say the study shows the need for stricter legal remedies to protect the overweight population. Chances are, economically, you’re feeling the “pinch” right now. More and more of us who consider ourselves middle-class Americans are beginning to feel our standard of living has diminished.

In a new poll out, nearly two-thirds say they haven’t made any economic progress over the past five years. One-third say they’ve actually gone backwards and about a quarter say they’re just treading water. Eight in ten middle-class Americans say it is now harder to maintain their standard of living than just a few years ago when wages peaked in 1999.

If you manage to watch the evening news most nights, Katie Couric soon may not be one of your choices. There’s a story going around that her days are numbered and that she could be leaving CBS as early as January, well before her contract expires in 2011. CBS News continues to place third to NBC and ABC in the evening news race. Both CBS and Katie released statements downplaying the story, but they stopped short of denying it.

If you own a Toyota, you may be impacted by a recall they’ve just announced. It affects over 500,000 Corolla and Matrix models. Apparently bolts in the power window system can become loose and could eventually cause a window to shatter. Almost 150 cases have been reported to Toyota so far. The recall involves 2003-2004 model years. If you car has manual windows then you’re okay.

If you’re in the market for a new laptop, you might want to check out some new low-cost, miniaturized HP laptops. They go on sale later this month with the focus being on schools actually. But they also are looking to adults who are looking to buy two laptops, one full-power machine for the home or office, and a lightweight one just for browsing the web and to use on-the-go. They’ll start at under $500.

If you have trouble spelling common words, you might be able to blame technology. A new survey at least says a lot of us struggle with that and blame our gadgets. Many in the survey struggled to spell words like “calendar,” “embarrass,” and “questionnaire.” Despite the struggles, nearly a third claimed their spelling was excellent and almost half considered their spelling at least good. From predictive spelling cell phones and text abbreviations, not to mention computer spell-checkers, we don’t have to think about it as much as we used to.

Friday on the Family Name Game we'll call out the name Hannah. If you're the immediate family member (mom , dad, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife) of Hannah, listen then for your chance to make her the STAR of the show. Show Notes for Wednesday, April 9th...

Ai_judges_4As the field of American Idol contestants narrows, a new survey of fans shows most see David Archuleta as the likely winner. David Cook is considered to be the most talented by those surveyed. And even though his number-one trait is “rude,” Simon was chosen by 64 percent as their favorite judge. Randy and Paula each received only about 17 percent of the “favorite” vote.

When it comes to books, most of us can agree on one thing – the Bible is our favorite according to an online poll. Our second favorite isn’t as clear cut. Men, by and large, chose “The Lord of the Rings” and women usually went with “Gone with the Wind” as their second favorite book. Most young adults chose the Harry Potter series as their second favorite.  Clink the link below for more.

If you were trying to fly on American Airlines yesterday, you might’ve run into some trouble. The company canceled about 500 flights as they tried for a second time to comply with federal rules about wiring. They expect to cancel more today and possibly beyond today. They’re not sure though how many. It depends on how fast they can inspect and, if necessary, rework the wiring. At least they are offering meals, lodging and rental cars to people who are affected.

The Tennessee Lady Vols have done it again…won their second consecutive national championship. Last night they routed Stanford 64 – 48. It’s the eighth title for Tennessee’s women’s basketball team.

You might remember actor Patrick Swayze going public with his battle with cancer a few weeks ago. He’s been undergoing treatment for several weeks and turns out his body’s had an excellent response to the treatment. His family says they appreciate all the prayers they’ve received. His doctor says since it working so well, he’ll continue the same therapy for now.

If you allow yourself to shop while you’re in a bad mood, look out. It could cost you! Of course you no better than to grocery shop on an empty stomach, but now they say shopping when you’re blue could bust your budget. Past studies have shown that spending money, whether for selfish reasons or for a gift, can boost your self-esteem and mood, at least temporarily, so it stands to reason you might try to pick yourself up with a gift, or two, or three.  Click the link below for more.

Apparently, you have a lot to say about Starbucks. They launched a website yesterday asking customers to pitch to them changes they should make to revive their business, and they’re coming in by the thousands. Some are pretty good: A punch card system with a free drink after so many purchases. A free cup of coffee on your birthday. A discount for using your own mug. Or how about being able to skip long lines by ordering your usual drink with the swipe of a card when you walk in the door? The website, by the way, is MyStarbucksIdea.com.

Yesterday, Condoleezza Rice left the door open a bit that she might be interested in running as vice president on John McCain’s ticket. When pressed about it by a reporter yesterday, she declined to say she would never be interested. Instead, she chose to lavish some praise on McCain.

Disney has just previewed 10 new animated movies expected to be released in the next four years and most of them will be in 3-D. Including new installments of the “Toy Story” and “Cars” as well as two new fairy tales. With the exception of the movie “Wall.E,” a robot love story that opens June 28, and “The Princess and the Frog,” the remaining eight movies will all be made in digital 3-D.  Click the link below for more.
