No List Required
The headline read: The Vatican Adds
to List of Sins. The article went on to say that “in medieval times, the
seven deadly sins included gluttony, lust and sloth. Now the Vatican is updating its list of
evils to include drug use, pollution, genetic experimentation and imbalances
between the rich and poor.”
Updating the list of sins? Don’t
act surprised. And this isn’t about Catholicism. We all have
our list. We love lists, so why not? Your list may include actual
sins, some that are not; some obvious, others creatively omitted.
While God does point out some things we are to avoid, is He really prescribing
a list to follow? Didn’t Jesus sacrifice His life to free us from all
that pertained to trying to keep the list (a.k.a. The Law)?
It was necessary, because we couldn't even come close to accomplishing that
list. So, if there's no list... what's a list-keeper to do? Care
for and thrive in—the relationship. The wonderfully list-freeing,
loved-always-by-the-One-who-created-you, personal relationship we can all
have. So, come on, let's have the list... now begin doing what's right
for the relationship. No list required.
